The Lovely Eggs are a duo from Lancaster, England. Never heard of them? Well, neither had I until a couple of years ago. They are David Blackwell and Holly Ross, now a married couple with irreverent, punkish attitude. They have released eight full length albums since their debut in 2009 and a number of singles, and have a large following of what I can only call “eggheads” (pun intended).

In 2017 they released a limited edition vinyl 7-inch called “I Shouldn’t Have Said That / Melody for Meathead” on their own Egg label. The heavy drum and guitar put me in mind of that other rock duo thecWhitecStripes!

I only stumbled across the song when I did a search for record covers by David Shrigley, and this popped up! There are four versions listed on Discogs: three vinyl versions and a promotional CD-r. There is a 5-inch lathe-cut single edition of 100 numbered copies (each copy accompanied by a personalised letter from the band):

There were two 7-inch vinyl singles; a limited edition (unnumbered) on black and white vinyl and a “standard” black vinyl version.

And, as a special bonus, David and Holly included a letter congratulating the buyer on getting hold of this rare single:

As if this wasn’t enough, in 2025, Shrigley produced a poster for the band to “celebrate” their 100th anniversary tour in 2105!

This completes my collection of the works David Shrigley has so far done for the Lovely Eggs. I have yet to find out the collaboration came about. I’m working on that.

And just to complete my collection of the ”I Shouldn’t Have Said That” single, I just found a copy of the one-track promotional CD-r that revealed the single’s release date; 3rd November, 2017.

I contacted the David and Holly via the band’s official site tonask how their collaboration with David Shrigley came about, and got this answer:

Ta for getting in touch. We have been corresponding with David Shrigley for probably almost 20 years. We loved his art and made contact a long time ago and are friends. I guess we liked his world and he liked ours. We hope this answers your question.

The ”Can’t remember the letters” refers, of course, to the personal letters sent with the very limited 5-inch and 7-inch versions of the ”I Shouldn’t Have Said That” single.
